H.R.H. Prince Arthur of Connaught

Prince Arthur of Connaught KG KT GCMG GCVO GCStJ CB PC (Arthur Frederick Patrick Albert; 13 January 1883 – 12 September 1938)

On 17th March 1923, the Province of Berkshire had suffered a great loss through the death of its Provincial Grand Master, R.W. Bro. John Thornhill Morland, M.A., P.G.D., in his eighty fifth year. In July 1924 it was announced in the lodge that he was to be succeeded by H. R.H. Prince Arthur of Connaught, son of the Grand Master, the Duke of Connaught. Seven months later Prince Arthur was elected a joining member of Wellesley Lodge and remained a member until his death in 1938. Tradition has it that after the formality of Grand Lodge he used to express his approval of the Wellesley informality in such matters as not wearing gloves, not processing in and out, and so on, and encouraged the Lodge to continue in this way. Perhaps this accounts for our one-time reputation for ‘Wellesley working”.
